Memorable quotes

I know we all have one; a favorite quote. We use them all the time. You say them to cheer people up when they are sad. Maybe you have a quote hanging on a mirror to read and use it to make yourself stronger when trying get through tough times. Quotes have even been used to bring a nation together. We can't forget, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy

Quotes have been used for centuries. Sometimes people are asked to make a quote and sometimes a quote is made accidentally. One quote that I use all of the time was made by Dr. Seuss and it says, "Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." Whenever I sign a wedding card, I always write off to the side, "May you always have what you want and may you always want what you have." I got that one from my Aunt; not sure where she heard it.

  1. I'm not sure this counts as a quote but a "saying" I always repeat to myself goes as follows: "No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them." Enjoyed your post, Sarah!

  2. Very intersting post Sarah! My favorite quote is- "It is what it is!" Its words to live by so that I never "Sweat the small stuff or make a mountain out of a molehill!"

  4. Great post, Sarah! I have 2 favorite quotes, both from Maya Angelou.

    "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

    And this one is my favorite quote about writing...

    "The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart."

  6. Sarah, what a wonderful post. My mom was always writing down quotes from all kinds of places. It's one of the things she and I shared in common. Our love of books and writing.

    When I was around 10 years old my grandparents (my father’s parents) passed away within a year of each other. And we were going through a lot of changes in our family. Sacrifices were made and we each had to do our part as a family in that difficult time. But the responsibility mostly fell to my father. That year in school we had to find a quote that best described who you were as a person. This was my quote.

    ~"The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become"~ Charles Dubois

    At that moment in time my father became the head of the family in all respects. He was no longer the baby of the family as both his parents and older brother had passed, his sister was in a nursing home having suffered a massive stroke. Through the years I watched him sacrifice himself for his family. His commitment to family makes him the greatest man alive in my eyes.

    For me the quote has resonated through my own sacrifices for my family. It is a sacrifice easily made. Whether you become the head of family or take on more responsibilities, maybe even a change in your career. It is the sacrifice you make of self that will shape who you will become.

  7. What a lovely post, Sarah! I just got back last night from vacation, so am only reading this now. I'd say the quote I recite most often is something my grandmother used to say: "There but for the grace of God go I." I feel so blessed (knock wood!) in so many aspects of my life, it reminds me never to take anything for granted.

  9. Wow. I have several 'favorite' quotes, but I guess I'll have to use the one on the wall above my computer. I look at it daily as I strive to write the very best story, article, e-mail to family, whatever, that I can...author unknown..."Satisfaction doesn’t always come from the job. It usually comes from a job well done."

  10. Not sure where it came from, but my favorite quote is, "Excellence, not perfection." It always reminds me perfection is unattainable, so strive for personal excellence instead.

  12. One of my favorite quotes is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I'm always trying to explain to my kids that we should treat people the way we want to be treated, not necessarily the way they treat us. Now there are exceptions when you need to blast someone for bad or rude behavior so they really get the point :)

I am happy to announce that the winner is Jena Lang. I loved both of your quotes but the one that got to me was your second one. It touched me because that is exactly the kind of writer I want to be.

  14. Jena, Congrats! Great quote from Maya Angelou. She is without a shadow of a doubt my personal hero. I have about five books from her including I know why the Caged Bird sings. She has too many qoutes to pick from for me personally. I love In All Ways a Woman. Good, good poem that all women should use as a personal anthem. This one as you say, slid through my brain and touched me deeply to my soul.

    It reminded me of what I have always felt about myself which is that I do not need to justify who or what I am to know who I am.
    I am comfortable in my own skin.
