When Jack lands on her doorstep, injured and on the run from gang enforcers out for blood and hot on his tail, she makes the split second decision to offer him refuge.

Not only will he fill the open position of cook, he offers her the exclusive of a lifetime: his no holds barred story as war counselor inside national super gang, the Creds. She’ll shoot straight to the top, and he’ll bury the gang, then disappear—a win-win.

But they’ve both got something to hide, and falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan. With time running out and gang enforcers closing in, can the trust they’ve forged survive the ultimate test?

Find out in A Mighty Good Man...3 Days. 2 People. 1 Story.

CHAPTER 1 EXCERPT

Zip. Zilch. Null. Nada. Void. The empty set.

No text. No email. No electronic communiqué of any kind.

Scowling, ‘Hank’ Jerry—a woman who wore the self-made moniker the way some might armor—jammed her smartphone into the front pocket of her cargo pants and sucked a drag off her first cancer stick of the day, exhaling into the predawn behind her Aunt Henry’s restaurant. The fluorescents overhead cast a harsh glow over this particular piece of real estate in Fiddler’s Elbow, Pennsylvania—a throwback hunky mill town where dial-up was considered high tech and people still lived life one pierogie at a time.

From the shadows behind the dumpster, a man emerged and limped toward her, clutching his side, his chest heaving, clouds of his breath hanging in the April air.

“Hide me!” he gasped.

“What the hell?” Heart pounding, Hank retreated a few steps and threw her cigarette to the ground. Blood, bruises, panic—all of it oozed from this man who’d materialized like smoke. Tires squealed on pavement in the alley running the length of the restaurant and hodge-podge of neighboring buildings.

“Will you?” he ground out.

A dozen fleeting impressions swamped her brain. Muscular. Dirty. Unshaven. Murderer? Crazy? Eyes, wild and green, probing and pleading in the artificial light. In the alley, car doors slammed. Feet pounded gravel and shouts cut through the dark. Two people? More?

“Please.”

They locked eyes. No, said her gut. Not crazy. But maybe she was.

Two things have helped Nicole cope since the murder of her husband. One is running her detective agency, and the other is her guardian angel Mira. When Mira is killed by a demon, Nicole accepts the help of a Ridge, a long haired, cigar smoking diamond in the rough with wings. Things go from bad to worse when a replacement guardian cannot be found. She has to trust Ridge, which is tricky when she realizes there are no demons or angels, just parasitic aliens that humans have built the myths of these celestial beings around. Ridge isn’t an angel or a devil, but an alien half breed known as a Midworlder. He is also way too sexy for his own good, or is it her own good.

Day 14 of Two Weeks of Romance

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope you all are able to celebrate this romantic holiday with the one you love! Here at HEART OF ROMANCE, I try to bring romance to life as often as I can because I don't think we live these special moments just on February 14th. Every day there are special little things that we experience that are romantic.

As writers, we try to capture love and romance in our books. Today, I would like to introduce you to two authors who have done just that.

First, we have author, AMY JERECKI and her book, Captured by the Pirate Laird.

Captured Announcement:

Hello everyone! I’m super excited to announce the February 17th release of CAPTURED BY THE PIRATE LAIRD, a sinfully sexy Scottish historical romance. To celebrate, I’m giving away a signed copy of the print book.

BLURB-
Ripped from passion that will be forever seared into their souls, will Anne and Calum risk everything for love?

Wed by proxy to a baron old enough to be her grandfather, Lady Anne trudges up the gangway of a galleon that will deliver her into the arms of a tyrant. Crestfallen, she believes her disastrous life cannot get worse—until she awakes to the blasts of cannon fire.

Facing certain death, Anne trembles in her stateroom while swords clash and the chilling screams of battle rage on the deck above. When a rugged Highlander kicks in her door, she prays for a swift end.

But Laird Calum MacLeod has a reason for plundering the ship—and it’s not a stunning English lass. With no other choice, he takes Anne to his crumbling keep on the isle of Raasay and sends a letter of ransom to her husband. In time, Anne grows to understand MacLeod’s plight and finds it increasingly difficult to resist Calum’s unsettling charm—until the baron sends a reply agreeing to terms.

Next, I would like to introduce you to author, JEVENA WILLOW, and her book, Wise Indecision.

BLURB-
Becca Wellerby is to be the new sheriff of Sweet Willow, North Dakota. A town of only men, she didn’t come all this way just to be shunned by those who don’t want her as their boss. This is a new start to a new beginning. Back off...or get out of her way.

Fox Windlow figures a woman as sheriff will ruin everything, including the stubborn unwillingness of all the men in town. He can’t solve a murder, protect the innocent, and still keep hot looking Becca at bay without something going wrong...or losing his heart to her.

Excerpt-

“Good. Get back in your patrol car, and start leading the way.”

Becca stepped back, watching the man do as told. She held back her sly grin until he was well out of sight. She had no actual idea if Fox Windlow and Dan Laherty were partners. They were not exactly cut from the same cloth. Yet, by playing her cards right in what was known as a man’s game, she’d gotten herself an escort directly to her future.

With any luck, she would have the entire police force waiting there to help carry her personal belongings inside.

As she followed behind Officer Laherty’s marked squad car, she glanced in the squad’s rearview mirror and watched his mouth moving. He was talking into his radio, likely informing anyone else foolish enough hidden up ahead to back off before heads started to roll. She was in no mood to be harassed again.

Twenty minutes later, she carefully maneuvered her cumbersome van up a long, gravel driveway, then parked the vehicle behind the squad car. She shut down the engine in utter relief and took a few moments to gather her breath, and hopefully enough courage to actually get out of the vehicle. She did not feel ready to face this second challenge just yet.

She studied the dilapidated house in front of her surrounded by lots of nothing. Ill-manicured lawn, a carpet of decaying leaves at least three inches thick, burdock four feet high under the windowsills, and if she was not mistaken the chimney was a little off-kilter.

No wonder she’d missed the turnoff. She hadn’t been looking for a place in the middle of nowhere. Somehow, the mental image of home for the next twenty-plus years was slightly different than this. It would probably take her years to feel at home. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, again, and she felt the familiar pinch to the heart. She’d certainly never felt at home anywhere else.

“Captain?” Officer Windlow stood outside her vehicle, his hand held out to guide her down the one large metal step that it would take her to gain North Dakota ground under her feet. He must have driven straight here from pulling her over. He’d gained enough time while his cohort followed on the path of his sins.

She nodded her thanks to such a gallant show of chivalry, but ignored the kind gesture as best she could. After all, she was still spitting tacks over the tiny matter of being pulled over not once, but twice, by Sweet Willow’s finest. They’d earned her wrath. The very least she could do was reward them their prize.

She might have been ready for a new challenge, but she wasn’t ready for what a man could complicate, and Fox Windlow was just too much man and too much complication this late at night.

Becca shook off any ill feelings. She glanced at the monstrosity that loomed directly in front of her and sucked in a deep, agonizing breath. Well . . . this was it. This was her very last second chance. And she was surrounded by nothing but . . . incredibly gorgeous men? Yes. Fate sucks.

BIO-
Jevenna lives in Wisconsin in the same small town she was born in. Her debut novel, Wise Indecision, she has five novels with Soul Mate Publishing, each holding true to the characterizations and idiosyncrasies of small town folks. The smaller the town—the bigger the secrets.

She is happily married and has two wonderful sons. Most say they married their high school sweetheart. Jevenna married the cute guy she’d met in her kindergarten class when five years old. Quite romantic! She has spent the last twenty-five years as co-owner and operator of the family dairy farm and writes in her spare time. With a smile, this translates to wet springs, cold winters…so, pretty much all the time.

She is a PRO member of RWA and Green Bay chapter member of WisRWA, and writes contemporary, historical, suspense, and paranormal romances. When not writing—and not farming—she loves to kayak, and do anything outdoorsy; loves to get her hands dirty. Her motto she devotes enormous time to: “Every life should have nine cats…and of course one great man!”

Halloween Special Day 4

I will be giving away an autographed copy of my novel, Dreams of the Highlander to one lucky commenter!

Enjoy this excerpt!

Chapter 1

“Love looks with the mind, not with the eyes.”

William Shakespeare

Newtonmore Scotland, 1701

“Mairi,” he whispered.

“I love ye with all of my heart.” The evidence of that love clung to her soft voice.

Alexander swallowed the lump of fear that rose in his throat. “I love ye, too.” He lowered his gaze to their beautiful son nestled in his arms. Brown hair dusted the little head and he gently ran his hands over the silky forehead as he fought back tears.

“I want ye to be happy, Alexander.” A blanket of confusion covered him as she turned away in sadness to stare out the window.

“What are ye saying, Mairi? Ye’re going to be fine.” He said it with as much conviction as he could muster. His hand cupped her cheek, his thumb slowly brushing strokes back and forth.

Alexander readjusted himself on the bed. She turned then, to stare back into his eyes, her hand grasping his. The sadness had left and in its place, determination settled in.

“No, I won’t and we both know it.” She swallowed with difficulty. “Promise me, Alexander. Promise me ye willna grieve for me forever.” He watched, stunned, as her hand dropped from his.

Alexander heard his mother sobbing in the background as he sat there with his stillborn son held tightly in his arms and watched his wife slip peacefully from this world.

Interview with Author JULIA BADE

1.) Tell us about your book.

The Feria opens in the summer, just before the U.S. enters WWII. Soledad, our heroine, is ready to start a life of her own, beating great odds and earning her place at Stanford in the fall. Life couldn’t be more perfect when she falls hopelessly in love with Xavier, a boy she meets at the feria (Mexican fair). But her love for him will be forsaken when her father marries her off in hopes that this contract marriage with a reputable banker will save the family’s failing fortune. The books spans over two decades following the life of Soledad, watching her conceal a shocking secret from that special summer with Xavier, and reuniting dramatically with him in a less than comfortable situation.

2.) Do you have a writing routine? Where do you usually do your writing?

I wish I had a writing routine, or better yet, a schedule!! My writing routine is to write late at night when the work of the day is done and my little darlings are all asleep… but I do have to say that once in a while I toss other obligations aside, and I’ll literally write from like 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.! In between, the kids and I will have a little picnic, or they’ll play outside while I write. So although I’m engrossed in my writing, I’m still maintaining my children’s best interests! And my best writing spot is in my bed, no matter what time of the day I embark on a writing adventure.

3.) Why do you write in the genre/sub-genre that you do? Any plans in the future to write in a different one? Gosh! I feel overly inspired by love and romance. Once I wrote my first one, I was hooked! I don’t have one set sub-genre. The Feria is historical, but I’m in the middle of a paranormal and have written two contemporaries. The stories just keep coming and I just can’t stop until they’re out of my head! I also dabble in children’s books that I write with my boys. Right now we’ve got an excellent little series about a little boy and his zombie BFF.

4.) How do you stay motivated when writer’s block hits or your muse won’t cooperate?

I always look at the finished product, even when that vision is sitting in the back of my mind. The feeling when you’ve completed your manuscript is inexplicable. And then you go and edit it and tear it apart and re-write it, and you’ll get to have that moment all over again. Ha!

5.) What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

*zzzzzz* This gal is BORING! Sadly, nothing strange to report. Oftentimes, though, I’ll people watch or eavesdrop on dialogue for writing purposes.

6.) Describe yourself in three words.

 Tired. Mommy. Writing-Addicted.

7.) What do you like to do in your leisure time?
Write. I could write all day if life permitted it! Otherwise, it’s all about the family!

8.) Tell us about your current release in a couple of sentences.

First love is beautiful until it's stolen...

Opening in the summer of 1941, we find Soledad, a smart, educated young Mexican-American with big plans to start college in the fall. Then one night at the fair in Mexico (the feria), her heart is stolen. Life is now bliss, but when her father's agricultural empire is threatened, he'll betray Soledad in an act meant to save the family’s fortune.

Brutally torn from her true love, Xavier, Soledad’s existence is thrown into uncertainty. Stuck in a contract marriage, she struggles but finally manages to put her life back together until... two decades and a daughter later... fate intervenes.

THE FERIA is a daring love story dancing on both sides of the border, intricately written around Mexican and American cultures and the great uncertainty that comes with love.

9.) Can you tell us a little about your next project?

Oooh! I’d love to!! My new Paranormal Romance entangles humans, angels of light and darkness, and the Greek gods.

When two angels fight over a woman’s soul, only one can win.

Jacob, an angel of light, has fallen in love with Dr. Dalia Vida, a professor of Romance Languages whose class has become his most favorite haunt. Her soul calls out to him in a way he can't resist. There’s a connection that reminds him of something he once had, something so powerful that he’s never been able to heal from the loss. But when his discouraged dabbling with humans nearly gets Dalia killed, he’ll now have to fight off his counterpart, the Angel of Death, who wants the woman, or the soul, rather, that is rightfully his. But there’s a secret within Dalia, one she doesn’t even realize. And once both angels discover it, there will be hell, or shall we say Hades to pay.

A few quickies!

1) Leather pants or blue jeans?
Blue jeans! Especially if they have holes in the knees!

2) A night out or a night in?
Always a night in. Some of my most romantic dates have involved a spectacular dinner and quiet time with the hubster after the little ones are out cold!

3) Boxers or Briefs?
Briefs!

4) Coke or Pepsi?
 Coke.

5) What is your favorite genre of music?
I’m a lover of all genres for sure!

6) What is your favorite meal?

My sister’s lasagna! I guard that recipe with my life!

Interview with Author PATRICIA W. FISCHER

Flawed, Funny, and Fabulous

One of my favorite movies of all time is Romancing the Stone.

Romancing the Stone trailer (http://youtu.be/WokoWHHAxp4)

I mean, who doesn’t love the idea of a dull life being turned upside down with adventure, love, and treasure with a hot, bad boy who only has eyes for you?

Of course, I’m not so sure if I’m game about running for my life from drug runners in Columbia, but the idea of adventure does have its merits. That’s one of the many reasons I wanted to be a writer. To create worlds that would be escapes from everyday reality and why not? The world can be a stressful place, full of uncertainty, especially when you add in that upcoming Mayan Apocalypse thingy, but I don’t want it to be a perfect world. Just a world full of great characters and wonderful scenarios. For years I’d avoid many homework assignments and zone out during lectures as stories ran through my brain. I’ve got boxes of journals of ideas, half written stories, life experiences, and complaints about why my social calendar wasn’t full my entire four years in high school and the size of my thighs.

During nursing school, I kept asking if particular drugs were traceable if you gave them certain ways. My instructor became very distressed that I kept asking this, until my classmates said, “Oh, don’t mind her. She’s a writer.”

But I digress…back to Romancing the Stone. This was one of the reasons I wanted to write romance.

When I watch this movie, it’s a classic take on what romances were thought to be at the time: silly stories of girls in distress, waiting for a man to rescue her and make it all better.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Romance novels and movies are about empowerment for both the man and woman. They are about these characters liking each other at their worst and encouraging each other to be their best.

Are there stories where the woman flakes out and gives it all up for the man she “just can’t live without?” Sure and I could name a few hear, but I won’t. I don’t read those books or watch those movies because I think they are ridiculous to see a woman be a vapid, shell of a person, and overrun by a dominate male. Regardless, they fill a niche for someone out there. It’s just not my thing.

I like movies and books where I see both characters grow.

Let’s go back to Romancing the Stone for a second. Where do they begin?

Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) starts out as a clueless, shut-in who lives her life through her writing and a good bottle of booze, but a turn of events forces her out of her sheltered life and immediately into adventure with Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas).

With very little prep, Joan Wilder quickly finds a way to survive in the jungle and eventually become an equal to Colton, which only gets him interested in her more.

Isn’t that what we want for our own characters? To immediately throw them outside their worlds of comfort and give them some other path to take?

Half the time, Joan has no idea what she’s doing and Jack can’t fight the feelings he has for her. It’s romantic chemistry at its finest and one of the most fun rom-coms to watch because in the end, they both discover who they really are as individuals and as a couple. Basically, they rescue each other. Love it!

In my debut novel, Weighting for Mr. Right, Megan Sayla starts off a lot like Joan Wilder—confused, frustrated with her life, and a wallflower who winds up in a place she’s never been as she tries to navigate out of there without totally embarrassing herself. That’s where she unexpectantly meets Jacob Dante, a guy who’s all but given up on finding happily ever after or just a woman who’s worth dating once. He’s decided to focus on himself by making good money, kind of like Jack T. Colton.

Geez, I didn’t realize I’d written it like this movie until I wrote this article. I must really like this film, but honestly, this is the idea behind so many romance novels. Give the characters room to grow because no one wants to read about people who have it all figured out. How boring would that be?

Page One:

She says hi.

He says hi.

They fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after.

The end.

Epilogue: He makes a whole lot of money. The live in a mansion, have three children in four years, her boobs don’t sag from breastfeeding and she’s still a size two. They vacation in the south of France every summer and she never has to worry about wrinkles.

No thanks. I want characters that are flawed, funny, and fabulous. The more real than they are, the better the fantasy world of the writer because the best romances are the ones we can relate to. The ones who have us look at those in our lives and realize that many of our adventures are simply waiting for us to start. We just have to be willing to take that leap of faith and jump.

Interview with Author CALLIE HUTTON

Conflict: Contrived or Real?
By: Callie Hutton

Whatever genre you’re writing in, a reader expects conflict in the story. I mean, if there was no conflict, if everything was coming up roses, who would read the book? The hero and heroine have to be tortured. They have to suffer. Tears, recriminations, betrayal. Ah, the basis of any good love story.

In my recent release, A Prescription For Love, I tortured Heidi and Michael so much, tears came to my eyes as I read it over. Oh, did I make them suffer! Hehe. But, because it was a romance there was the typical HEA, even though I made them crawl through fire to get there.

As much as I love to read romance, there are a few types of conflict that cause me to throw the book across the room. Hmm. Well, not exactly anymore, since I read most of my books on my Kindle. They don’t tend to hold up well when you smack them against something hard.

The Let’s Talk conflict. When you have a conflict where a five minute conversation will end the angst, and neither one will instigate the conversation that will end it, I get annoyed. Unless there’s a good reason why they can’t talk. I mean, if one character is in a coma, all right. I won’t toss the book. If one of them is being blackmailed—as in A Prescription For Love—I’ll allow that. And if the misunderstanding is cleared up quickly, no problem there either.

Sometimes I want to scream at the heroine. “Just ask him!” I read one book where a two word sentence would have cleared up the conflict. Sigh. No patience for that.

Another type of conflict that drives me crazy is the one where the heroine knows someone (usually another woman) has an agenda, but the heroine believes what the nasty person tells her about the hero. It’s usually something horrible that makes the heroine cringe. Hello? Haven’t you noticed Miss I’m telling you this for your own good wants the hero, and hasn’t made a secret of it? So why would you believe this?

Again, if it only goes on for a page or two, I’ll suffer through. But if the conflict goes on for chapter after chapter, watch out for flying objects.

In my recently released Christmas novella, Miss Merry’s Christmas, the heroine overhears a conversation, and misunderstand what she hears. Nosey woman pays price. Because I didn’t want to lose my readers, as an author might have lost me, I resolved it all quickly.

For some bizarre reason, betrayal causes me anxiety in a book. If it appears a hero or heroine has been betrayed by the other, I get very upset. “No, no.” I shout at the page (sorry—Kindle screen). “He didn’t really do that. It only looks that way.”

I have been known to put aside a book with a strong betrayal conflict because it genuinely upsets me. Don’t tell me I’m nuts because I’ve reached that conclusion long before you read this.

Well now that you know my likes and dislikes. What about you? How do you feel about conflict? Are there any that annoy you? Or cause you anxiety?

Thank you so much for having me today. Here is the blurb for my release, A Prescription For Love:
