A talk about research-
Researching for this book, the second in The Victorian series, has been fun and somewhat surprising. I learned that a small sleepy town in Kansas was once the home of a large group of English/Scottish settlers who refused to embrace the western life, but rather brought their English life with them. From farm animals to lace for the tables, these people were determined not to leave their heritage behind.

I was raised in Kansas, but never knew the history of Victoria, Kansas until I visited my brother one summer. It so intrigued me that I knew I had to write not one, but three novels set there.

October, 1872 George Grant traveled by the Kansas Pacific railroad to Hays City. He was 50, with a vigorous six-foot frame, and carried himself with the grace and dignity of a king. He came to buy a large tract of land and form a colony of Englishmen. England was overcrowded. Worthy men could not make a living and young men had little future. He would name the colony for the queen, the Victoria Colony.

Wild Bill Hickok was marshal of nearby Hays City and enforced the Colt law. He shot up a bunch of soldiers from the Seventh Cavalry and was run out of town. Buffalo Bill Cody killed buffalo and peddled the meat from door to door in Hays City. Calamity Jane came from the east and could swear, shoot and hold her liquor with the best of them. She was genial and immoral and well liked, starting trouble wherever she went. Shootings were so regular it was like one long fourth of July. Hays City was one wild place.

Trains ran irregularly and rarely at night for fear of Indian Attack. Beyond Hays City the prairies stretched smoothly as far as they could see. In the far distance the blue sky kissed their purple edges. Antelope and buffalo grazed on the short green grass. Tall crimson grasses waved along the creek banks and sunflowers grew along the RR tracks. .

Permanent residences in the new settlement were all to be of stone, the frame buildings being turned over to the hired help. There would be free schools, a church, a library and special train rates. He would keep a herd of high-blooded stock, cattle, horses and sheep, a supply of pure seeds, steam cultivators such as were in use in England. None of these things were available to homesteaders.

On April Fool’s day 30 English and Scottish began their journey to America and the prairies of Kansas aboard a steamship leaving Scotland to begin a trip that would take a year by ship, rail, boat, and often horse-drawn stages. Many came with the assurance that allowances varying from 50 to 200 dollars a month would be sent to them regularly. They were called remittance men and were, for the most part, unmarried and in their early twenties.

On May 17, 1873 Mr. Grant and his first colony arrived at Victoria. In the group were 38 men, women and children and several head of Black and Red Aberdeen Angus Bulls, some sheep, and supplies needed upon their arrival. The Bulls were later placed on his own ranch and used to cross breed the long horn cattle from the area. Victoria became the birth place of Aberdeen Breed in America. The settlement grew and flourished for ten years. A nearby German settlement finally took over as the English moved out. No stone castle remain. Today the site is the home of St. Fidelis Church.

“Come sit with me, lass. I will keep ye warm.”

She did not move and he quirked an eyebrow at her hesitation. “I willnae harm ye. But ye dinnae need to stand about dripping wet and cold.” He tried a lopsided grin. “I only bite impertinent lasses.”

She almost smiled, but her lips trembled. “Then, sir, I am forewarned, for I fear I am nearly always impertinent.”

He laughed. “My name is ‘Ryan,’ not ‘sir.’”[C1]

The girl bit her lip and did not reply.

He sighed. “Saying it willnae make ye impertinent.”

“Ryan.”

His name rolled sweetly from her lips, sending a frisson through his veins. He blinked. She was too young. A mere lass. Teasing her was only a way to keep her from being afraid. He gave a reassuring nod. “There. That wasnae so hard. Now ye can sit with me and be warm.”

Still hesitant, she lowered herself to the cave’s dust-covered floor. He tucked the end of his plaide around her shoulders and pulled it down her side to hold in the heat. They sat quietly, listening to the wind rage outside. Ryan carefully controlled the unexpected storm quivering through his insides at her nearness.

The girl moved slightly. “My name is Gilda.”

Interview with Author GINA DANNA!

Once upon a time, this vampire ran into this pirate….

Ah, the love of pirates! Okay, of Captain Jack Sparrow…The Pirates of the Caribbean holds the attraction of many fans across the world. And vampires…the following of The Vampire Diaries and True Blood still continues to this day. But what if these worlds collided?

Three years ago, I began my historical romance novel about a pirate in the West Indies (Caribbean) and set it during one of the eras I love to read about – Regency (c. 1800). But the story needed a twist, a different approach. I liked the above vampire stories and many more so why not make my hero Alexander, not only a pirate captain but also a vampire pirate?

The make that one elementary change plunged the tale into a new sphere. Sailors of that era and before and even later, believed the seas were home to many monsters and evil spots that lay waiting to devour them and their ships. The kraken was one of the well-known creatures, known to seep up and take everything down into the inky depths of the sea. Mermaids were sirens, also leading men to the deaths. In the Caribbean, voodoo was born during the European occupation as a way to strike fear into the white oppressors. Plus the tales of vampiric creatures prevailed in Europe for centuries since the Black Death. Therefore, why not make the superstitious sailors of the sea, who feared these evils along with the scourge of the seas, pirates, come to face their own evil – a vampire pirate?

Her Eternal Rogue is a historical fiction steeped in romance of Alexander and Lavinia, based on historic research of pirates and vampires in the structure of Regency England. Step into the depths of the period in the West Indies where Alexander ruled the seas as the infamous pirate, Captain Sword, his rescue of Lady Lavinia and their return to her home in London in a tale of the unexpected!

Alexander sat at the table and finished another glass of rum, mentally assessing the damage to his ship. And his unwanted guest. Though attempting to drown himself in three-fourths of a bottle of rum, he wasn’t nearly inebriated enough to dampen his growing desire for her.

Ian sat across the table from him, staring. Alexander knew the Scotsman too well to believe he’d stay silent much longer.

“So,” the Scotsman began. “When will ye tell the lassie she’s gonnae home?”

Alexander looked at him hard and poured himself another glass. “I’ll not be goin’ close to any British port with a damaged ship...”

“Ach, I see,” the Scotsman speculated. “So, you thinkin’ about keepin’ her fer yerself, then?”

“No,” Alexander answered too quickly, downing a gulp. An absurd thought, he knew, but so tempting.

“Well,” Ian continued. “Wi’ her stayin’ here, that’ll leave many tae believe we’re cursed wi’ a woman onboard and no charges lifted.”

Alexander laughed. Cursed by having a woman onboard? He’d tell them about curses…

“Fine, put her in the aft cabin till we’re through with…”

“Capt’n, ye cannae be placin’ her there,” Ian scolded, sounding like a father reprimanding his son. “Be pirates on this ship, sair, and puttin’ her there is more or less tellin’ the boys she’s fer sharin’.”

            “What would you have me do?” Alexander barked. When Ian didn’t respond, Alexander downed another gulp. “Keep her where she is?”

“Aye.”

“Fine, then I’ll sleep in the aft cabin.”

“Capt’n,” Ian said quietly. “Ye cannae be doin’ that either.”

            Alexander glared at the glass in front of him. Damn, the man was right. Pirate ships had no assigned quarters. Sleeping areas were open to all. But on The Lily, Alexander’s curse and the pirates’ fear of it, enabled him to claim the larger cabin exclusively. But he was furious at having to house the English aristocrat there. Too far below her station when he’d lived in England, he would have been denied access to her but here… He shook his head. He and his crew had a reward for her safe return, and he had to remember that. Ah yes, the reward. A clean slate—for the moment. A few months with no law in pursuit, leaving them open to rob whomever they wanted. A laugh but one both sides held for the British navy remained heavily occupied across the ocean with the French, too busy to chase every pirate on the seas.

Sharing quarters with her, being so close to her, was too dangerous for them both. Her body was designed to entice any man to wanton desires. A temptation he couldn’t ignore since he’d kissed her the first time he saw her. Truly decadent on his part, but piracy did allow deviations to any plan. He’d wanted to kiss those ruby lips, to invade her mouth and, as he’d plunged his tongue into her, she’d tasted sweet, like strawberries and cream. Everything about her made him want to bury himself deep inside her. He downed another mouthful of rum. He feared if he was alone with her for too long, he’d lose all his control. He’d never love her. The idea of him ever loving a woman had been squashed that night years ago. But lust remained…

No, he thought, she had to go and soon.

Furious at the situation and how the rum had failed to diminish his desires, Alexander slammed his glass down and left the galley.

When he opened his cabin door, he readied himself for her demand that he release her. Prepared for her verbal assault, he sighed with relief when he saw Lavinia curled up tight in the wingback chair, asleep. She did not even move at the sound of the door. The moonlight gave her an angelic glow. So young and full of life. Asleep, her blond hair tumbling over her shoulders and her bare ankles and dainty feet bent partway beneath her. His cock twitched with longing. A fairy asleep in the devil’s den. There’d be no arguments, no demands nor screams of protest coming from her tonight. But he could make her scream in ecstasy. He closed his eyes, burying his thoughts.

The boat swayed slightly, and he stumbled. Leaning against the doorframe, he felt his tension drain. His eyes shut, and he allowed the rum to overtake him, sliding to the floor and into the arms of oblivion.

Interview with Author DEANIE ROMAN

1.)     Tell us about your book. Charming the Chieftain, is a medieval Scottish romance set in 1487 northern England and on the Borders. It starts with Lady Elisande Cadby deciding how she will endure the Rite of Purification before being forced to wed Baron Warford the Brutal. When she is betrayed by her father, she flees Cadby Hall armed with an arsenal of Pagan-rooted curatives and her ever-present comfort-stone. With the aid of a sexy, surly Scots Chieftain, Aeden Maxwell, she embarks on a harrowing escape across the Borders. Once there, she must battle against the Maxwell clan’s suspicions, Aeden’s mistress, his brother’s unwanted attentions, and decide whether to reveal a decades old family secret, or keep

2.)     Do you have a writing routine? For whatever reason, my writing flows in the late evening and I usually start around 9pm and end anywhere between 1:00-2:00pm. Happily, I have a fab husband who understands I might not rise until 10:00am the next morning!  

3.)      Where do you usually do your writing? I’m an Air Force wife, so my writing space changes every 2-3 yrs. At the moment we live in Southern Germany at the foot of the Schwabian Mountains and I write from a garret that overlooks two medieval castles. One is in ruins and the other, (my favorite) Lichtenstein Castle, which means ‘Castle of Light,’ is right in my line of sight every time I look out the window.

4.)     Why do you write in the genre/sub-genre that you do?  I love schlepping around museums, old castles, and combing through ancient tomes, rummaging around in trunks and bandboxes in the attic. I like the idea that objects or clothes have a story to tell.

5.)      Any plans in the future to write in a different one? I have two children’s books published and I’ve recently teamed up with a friend of mine who is an illustrator and we’re working on a children’s picture book. I love the cozy mystery genre as well, and have been writing a series on and off for a few years.

6.)     How do you stay motivated when writer’s block hits or your muse won’t cooperate?   I don’t believe in writer’s block per se, at least in the conventional sense of the term. I’ve never not been able to write---I just write crap until my creative flow decides to re-connect with my brain.

7.)     What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research? Followed a couple through IKEA, who were arguing very publicly. The hand gestures, head tosses and incredulous snorts coming from the pair was so theatrical, I used the scene in Charming the Chieftain.

8.)     Describe yourself in three words:  Creative, Fiery, Idiosyncratic

9.)     What do you like to do in your leisure time? I’ve been indulging my passion for travel the past few years and have visited eight countries so far! I also love to cook, and being a second generation Italian-American, my Nonnie taught me how to create all those lovely, old-world family dishes.

10.) Tell us about your current release in a couple of sentences. Lady Elisande Cadby seeks sanctuary in the arms of Chief Aeden Maxwell against accusations of witchery, but, when she uncovers a disturbing secret, she must practice the forbidden rituals to save the man she loves.

11.) Can you tell us a little about your next project? The only hint I’m willing to give up is that it takes place in the 1850’s just after the Crimean War… So stay tuned!

Interview with Author JULIA BADE

1.) Tell us about your book. 
The Feria opens in the summer, just before the U.S. enters WWII. Soledad, our heroine, is ready to start a life of her own, beating great odds and earning her place at Stanford in the fall. Life couldn’t be more perfect when she falls hopelessly in love with Xavier, a boy she meets at the feria (Mexican fair). But her love for him will be forsaken when her father marries her off in hopes that this contract marriage with a reputable banker will save the family’s failing fortune. The books spans over two decades following the life of Soledad, watching her conceal a shocking secret from that special summer with Xavier, and reuniting dramatically with him in a less than comfortable situation.



2.) Do you have a writing routine? Where do you usually do your writing?
 I wish I had a writing routine, or better yet, a schedule!! My writing routine is to write late at night when the work of the day is done and my little darlings are all asleep… but I do have to say that once in a while I toss other obligations aside, and I’ll literally write from like 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.! In between, the kids and I will have a little picnic, or they’ll play outside while I write. So although I’m engrossed in my writing, I’m still maintaining my children’s best interests! And my best writing spot is in my bed, no matter what time of the day I embark on a writing adventure.



3.) Why do you write in the genre/sub-genre that you do? Any plans in the future to write in a different one? Gosh! I feel overly inspired by love and romance. Once I wrote my first one, I was hooked! I don’t have one set sub-genre. The Feria is historical, but I’m in the middle of a paranormal and have written two contemporaries. The stories just keep coming and I just can’t stop until they’re out of my head! I also dabble in children’s books that I write with my boys. Right now we’ve got an excellent little series about a little boy and his zombie BFF.



4.) How do you stay motivated when writer’s block hits or your muse won’t cooperate?
 I always look at the finished product, even when that vision is sitting in the back of my mind. The feeling when you’ve completed your manuscript is inexplicable. And then you go and edit it and tear it apart and re-write it, and you’ll get to have that moment all over again. Ha!



5.) What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?
 *zzzzzz* This gal is BORING! Sadly, nothing strange to report. Oftentimes, though, I’ll people watch or eavesdrop on dialogue for writing purposes.



6.) Describe yourself in three words.
 Tired. Mommy. Writing-Addicted.



7.) What do you like to do in your leisure time? 
Write. I could write all day if life permitted it! Otherwise, it’s all about the family!



8.) Tell us about your current release in a couple of sentences.

First love is beautiful until it's stolen...

Opening in the summer of 1941, we find Soledad, a smart, educated young Mexican-American with big plans to start college in the fall. Then one night at the fair in Mexico (the feria), her heart is stolen. Life is now bliss, but when her father's agricultural empire is threatened, he'll betray Soledad in an act meant to save the family’s fortune.

Brutally torn from her true love, Xavier, Soledad’s existence is thrown into uncertainty. Stuck in a contract marriage, she struggles but finally manages to put her life back together until... two decades and a daughter later... fate intervenes.

THE FERIA is a daring love story dancing on both sides of the border, intricately written around Mexican and American cultures and the great uncertainty that comes with love.



9.) Can you tell us a little about your next project?

Oooh! I’d love to!! My new Paranormal Romance entangles humans, angels of light and darkness, and the Greek gods.

When two angels fight over a woman’s soul, only one can win.

Jacob, an angel of light, has fallen in love with Dr. Dalia Vida, a professor of Romance Languages whose class has become his most favorite haunt. Her soul calls out to him in a way he can't resist. There’s a connection that reminds him of something he once had, something so powerful that he’s never been able to heal from the loss. But when his discouraged dabbling with humans nearly gets Dalia killed, he’ll now have to fight off his counterpart, the Angel of Death, who wants the woman, or the soul, rather, that is rightfully his. But there’s a secret within Dalia, one she doesn’t even realize. And once both angels discover it, there will be hell, or shall we say Hades to pay.
